I have always found it interesting how loyal people are to certain brands, me included.
Where does that loyalty come from? I would think it comes from the quality of the product, if your onto a good thing, why change!!!
So how effective is marketing when you are locked into your favourite brands....???
Lets have a look at beer to work through this theory!!!
I have two favourite beers, Cascade or Coopers. I will purchase one or the other depending on availability.... I will even leave the bottle shop if I cant get either of these variety of froffy!!!
My love for these two beers were born out of family and mate-ship - not any fancy marketing campaign or advertising. Growing up in little old Hobart, you just smashed Cascade Draught cans with your mates, if you were getting a little fancy with a bit of extra coin that weekend then you would upgrade to Cascade Pale Ale. My love for Coopers came from an archery trip to Adelaide when I was 19 - all my archery mates drank Coopers and its a bloody good drop, so I followed suit and have continued ever since!!
So now lets look at My Top 3 Aussie Beer Ads:
Number #1 - VB's classic Boony campaign.
Now lets be honest - this is the coolest beer advertising campaign ever to hit this earth. David Boon is a beer drinking legend - once drinking 54 cans on a flight from Melbourne to London. Turning him into a little doll that talks is just genius.... just bloody brilliant!!!!
Number #2 - Carlton Draughts' "Its a BIG Ad"
Just the epicness of this ad blows your mind! Imagine the logistics of making this happen.... its not Lord of the Rings - its a beer ad. Hats off to them!!
Number #3 - Pure Blonde Pure Land
How Aussie is that truck driver.... the contrast between the "pure" people and old mate the truckie gets this one in my Top 3 Aussies Beer Ads.
So.... did it inspire me to drink VB. Carlton Draught or Pure Blonde........ no bloody chance!!!! You cant move past the fact that they are all average beers.... therefore you can have the coolest ads in the world, even get a beer drinking legend involved and its not going to help you!!!
So for me, who is a passionate beer drinker....... marketing is a big waste of money!!!! If it tastes good, I am a very good chance of drinking it.... end of story!!!
What do you guys reckon? Am I talking rubbish and you've been smashing VB's ever since the Boony campaign? Or no matter what - you'll be drinking your favourite beer!!!
Let me know.
Over and out... enjoy your froffies and have a think about where you spend your marketing budget!
I agree with your findings here Mac5 - beer ads are good to watch, but don’t translate to sales and therefore don’t justify the marketing spend.
I think of my rotation of beers - 4 Pines, Little Creatures and Cascade Stout - and don’t think I’ve ever seen a tv ad for any of them! Same for the Fat Yak and James Squire varieties which are probably my next favourite.
It’s about taste, pure and simple. Get that right and you’ve got me.
